Human Health Workforce

HeDPAC will address the multifaceted challenges faced by the health workforce of the two regions, including education, employment, deployment, retention, and performance. Through South-South collaboration, HeDPAC will facilitate the sharing of innovative solutions and best practices between the two regions.

HeDPAC response to the issue and sharing AU and CARICOM initiatives in the specific area

Health systems can only function with health workers; improving health service coverage and realizing the right to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of health is dependent on their availability, accessibility, acceptability and quality. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates a global shortage of 18 million healthcare workers by 2030, with Africa and the Caribbean being significantly affected.

African and Caribbean regions characterized by the largest infectious diseases outbreak in the world, with a critical shortage of health personnel (…. doctors per 1,000 inhabitants). Africa is home to only …. % of health professionals, yet it alone carries 25% of the global disease burden. (Statistic needed)

Challenges faced by the health workers differ across countries and across sectors. In some countries challenges may result from the shortage of healthcare professionals, particularly doctors and nurses, maldistribution in rural and urban areas, inefficiencies, the migration of healthcare professionals to countries with better work conditions, higher salaries and limited educational resources.

The purpose of HeDPAC is to highlight the urgency of action, offers a potential solution to address human health workforce challenges in AU and CARICOM countries through south-south collaboration. By sharing experiences, resources, and expertise, countries can strengthen their healthcare systems and overcome common obstacles. Some key strategies for South-South collaboration include

knowledge Exchange and Capacity Building:

Established countries with well-developed health systems can share best practices, provide training opportunities, and offer technical assistance to countries facing workforce challenges.

Scholarships and Exchange Programs

Offering scholarships and exchange programs to healthcare professionals from countries with limited resources can help enhance their skills and knowledge. This approach enables professionals to gain valuable experience and return to their home countries, contributing to local healthcare capacity.

Telemedicine and E-Health Solutions

Information and communication technologies can facilitate remote consultations, knowledge sharing, and capacity building among healthcare professionals across borders. Collaborative telemedicine networks can provide support and expertise, particularly to countries with limited resources and remote areas.
